Millions of people experience eye problem each year. Some issues result in vision loss or blindness and some can be corrected with contact lenses or glasses.
Many of us are given to the fact that as we age, our eyesight deteriorates. But is it possible to improve sight, protect our eyes and prevent diseases which may affect our sight?
With a few simple tips, it is possible.
1. Eat food which is vision- healthy
You must have heard that eating carrots is good for your eyes but there are plenty of other foods that are beneficial for good eyesight.
Antioxidants help in preventing the formation of cataracts and are found in dark leafy greens such as collard greens, kale and spinach.
Grapes is also proved to support healthy eyes. An experiment conducted on retinal degeneration shows that a diet enriched with grapes protects the retina against the damaging effect of oxidative stress.
Studies have also shown eye health benefits from consuming fish which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as tuna, sardines, salmon etc. They also help vision cells to survive future disease or injury
2. Wear protective eye-wear
Although sunglasses are a trendy fashion accessory, the main role of sunglasses is to protect your eyes from Ultraviolet rays which are emitted by the sun.
When selecting shades, opt for safety over the style. Always buy from a legit source that block 99 – 100 percent of UVA and UVB radiation.
Also, wear protective eye-wear or gear if you work in hazardous job or play high risk sports.
3. Visit your eye doctor regularly
Visiting your eye doctor from time to time is the best way to protect your vision.
Not only will the eye test determine if you need glasses or not, but it can also spot any eye abnormalities or conditions which can be treated effectively if detected earlier.
If you are above the age of 60 years with increased risk of eye diseases, it is better to conduct an eye exam known as comprehensive dilated eye exam just to be on the safer side.
4. Give rest to your Eyes
If you are working all day staring at a computer screen, then you may need to consider breaks in between. In such conditions you may forget to blink often and end up with fatigued eyes by the end of the day.
Adapt the 20/20/20 rule to protect your eyes from Computer Eye Syndrome. Take a break every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
